Chimney Rock # 2: Hickory Nut Falls

My first post about our visit to Chimney
Rock was just to whet your appetite for
the outdoors.  What Judy and I looked
forward to was the hiking, which would
be both challenging and memorable.

This park map gives an overview of all the
park trails.  We arrived in town mid-afternoon
on Wednesday and by purchasing our tickets
after 4:00, we got free admission the next day.
This is a real plus if you want to spread out
your hiking and not kill yourself in one day.
Which we didn't.
You can click on this map to enlarge it.  The Blue
line is the trail to Hickory Nut Falls.  Below is the
 park's information about this trail.

We love waterfalls as much as we love
hiking, and it's exhilarating to hear the
roar of the falls as you approach.

The ancient stone steps add to
the atmosphere of being in a
timeless place.

It's awesome to see the waters
cascading down 400 feet.

This is looking down further into the
gorge.  The waters have quite a journey
beyond the observation area where we stood.

The sheer rock face extended far, far
to the left of the falls.

This view alone explains why this primeval
setting was ideal for the remake of "The Last
of the Mohicans."

In this video, take a virtual tour of
the falls, from top to bottom, at least
as far as I could safely lean!

My next post may be your favorite, and it
may make some of you weak in the knees--
as it did me!  It's about the climb to Chimney
Rock and then far beyond it to
Exclamation Point.  Seriously!
