Emma and Jessie at the Academy Awards
with Uncle Ken and Aunt Judy
Full story below
I've often wondered if everyone from schoolkids to day laborers would be more productive with every Monday off. Then, of course, as they say, Tuesday would be the new Monday, and so on. Nevertheless, when God ordained that there would be six days for man to work and one day of rest, he didn't stipulate that the work would be in a cubicle or office. I bet even today on Labor Day, a high percentage of people are doing some of those grueling household or yardwork chores that just make you feel like you've accomplished something. The IRS may not count it as work, but we know better. Anyway, everyone I know will take a four-day week whenever offered. It's a beautiful day for a holiday and the humidity is at least a bit lower (between hurricanes, I suppose).
***One special event Sunday afternoon was a bit of impromptu dramatics from Emma and Jessie. After I read them a favorite Uncle Remus/Br'er Rabbit tale, "Br'er Terrapin's Tug-of-War," the girls decided to enact the story after Sunday lunch. They created their own costumes and set with construction paper and a few simple props, then delighted the large (larger than we were before lunch!), appreciative audience. Jessie, as Br'er Terrapin, teamed up with Br'er Rabbit to fool Br'er Bear (Emma) and the other critters out of a big pot of taffy. It brought back great memories of Jennifer and Amanda's creative skits, often featuring one or more Taylors. No reason the "good old days" can't go full circle. Today's children still enjoy the pastimes of bygone generations, if only someone takes time to show them. (By the way, the picture of the girls was actually at Amanda's wedding).
